A Sophro-training class starts with the sophrologist and clients standing in a relaxed position with feet shoulder distance apart. (if the class is by conference call then the participant will require a dining room or office type chair and a loudspeaker on their phone. We also recommend that the participant is in front of their computer with skype and camera so that they have a visual reference for the exercises.)
The sophrologist then names parts of the body from head to toe and the clients focuse on the sensations and feelings. The client then gradually relaxes into what is known as the ‘Sophroliminal Level’ – the level of consciousness between being awake and being asleep.
The client and sophrologist then practice various exercises, both physical and mental, while moving between sitting and standing positions, after which the Sophrologist asks the student to move the body, stretch and, when ready, to open their eyes.
The positions and exercises in Sophrology have been designed so that the parts of the brain that relax the body are activated at the same time as the parts of the brain that focus and concentrate the mind. The training is, therefore, of the relaxed body and the alert mind in a state of inner calm and strength.
All sophrology sessions are carried out in a state between awake and asleep, they are called dynamic relaxations since they are done either sitting, standing or walking. They are designed to produce a calm, centred mind and body in all situations and increased awareness.
